What is the Intertidal zone?
The intertidal zone is where the land meets the sea. The upper boundary of the intertidal zone is where the water reaches during the high tide and the lower boundary is where the water reaches during the low tide. There are various types of intertidal zones, which include, but not limited to: beaches (kahakai), estuaries (muliwai), and rocky coastlines.
Mission
The purpose of this website is to highlight Hawaii's intertidal zones and everything within it. Ancient Hawaiians had a strong connection with the intertidal zone and made sure that its resources were managed effectively for future generations. Nowadays, it seems as if people have lost that connection and have instead taken advantage of our intertidal zones for their own benefits. Therefore, with this website, I want to bring attention and share knowledge about the intertidal zone. Visitors here will learn about the different types of intertidal zones, current and future threats intertidal zones face, various species, and future recommendations to protect and restore this fragile zone.
